A fresh take on Morrowind combat
Better Balanced Combat, developed by SilentNightxxx, is a mod that modernizes the combat system of Morrowind, offering players a smoother and more predictable battle experience. By removing the traditional dice roll-based hit chance, the mod ensures that attacks land if they appear to hit, provided they are not blocked. This simple yet transformative change removes frustration from missed attacks, making every encounter feel fair and responsive.
Streamlined mechanics, no extra dependencies
One of the defining features of Better Balanced Combat is its lightweight design. The mod does not require MWSE or MGE, which means it works seamlessly with OpenMW and TES3MP. Only a single, ultra-lightweight script is used to implement all the changes, keeping performance overhead minimal. In addition, all effects of the mod are clearly applied and visible to the player, maintaining transparency in combat mechanics without unnecessary complexity.
Enhanced player and NPC balance
Better Balanced Combat introduces thoughtful adjustments for both players and NPCs. Players receive a speed boost, faster magicka and fatigue regeneration, and strength bonuses based on weapon type and skill level, while NPCs and creatures are also strengthened and balanced to ensure fairness. Some combat messages that interrupt immersion, such as notifications for out-of-charge enchanted weapons, have been removed for a cleaner gameplay experience.
Intelligent item and spell adjustments
The mod also rebalances various item and spell effects. Certain effects, such as Fortify Attack, Sanctuary, and Blind, are replaced or removed in favor of more meaningful enhancements like Fortify Block or mild Strength boosts. Spellmaking and enchanting are adjusted accordingly, with advanced customization options available through the mod’s installer. Weapon range and damage issues are addressed with a custom version of Chantox's Weapon Range Adjustments and Rebalance mod.
Compatibility and considerations
Better Balanced Combat is designed to integrate smoothly with existing mods. Player-created custom races, as well as NPCs and creatures using vanilla types, are fully compatible. For mods that introduce custom races or creature types, an included auto-patcher ensures proper functionality. The mod does not affect spells, enchantments, ingredients, potions, or weapons added by other mods unless they modify vanilla races or creature types, in which case the auto-patcher can help maintain balance.
Combat made clear and balanced
Better Balanced Combat transforms Morrowind’s combat into a smoother, more predictable experience without adding unnecessary complexity. By removing random hit rolls, balancing player and NPC stats, and refining spells and weapons, the mod ensures fairness and clarity in every encounter. Lightweight, compatible, and transparent, it allows players to focus on strategy and immersion, making each battle engaging and satisfying.
